Paynesville, Liberia – October 1st, 2024– The Help a Mother and Newborn Initiative (HMNI), a local youth-led non-profit organization dedicated to maternal and child health, is proud to announce a series of fundraising initiatives aimed at empowering young women and strengthening community health efforts across Liberia. These fundraising events will directly support two of HMNI’s flagship programs: EmpowerHer Journey and the Community Health Volunteers Empowerment programs.

Running from October through December 2024, the series of fundraising efforts will offer various ways for the public to get involved, contribute, and make a tangible impact on the lives of women, children, and entire communities. HMNI invites individuals, families, businesses, and institutions to participate, sponsor, or donate to these efforts. Every contribution will directly go towards supporting the programs mentioned above.


Fundraising Events/Activity

  • Street Car Wash Fundraiser
    • Dates: October 21st and 28th
    • Locations: Vamoma Junction and Broad Street, Monrovia
    • Details: Get your car washed by our staff while contributing to a great cause! Proceeds will support maternal and newborn health initiatives.
  • Shoe Shine Fair
    • Dates: October 16th and 20th
    • Locations: Universities and churches in Montserrado
    • Details: Refresh your footwear while empowering women! All proceeds will go toward empowering 150 young mothers through skills training and mentorship programs.
  • Online Fundraising Campaign
    • Launch Date: Ongoing
    • Details: Can’t attend in person? No problem! You have a another chance to contribute to our goal of raising $15,000 US. Every dollar counts, helping to transform lives by enhancing access to healthcare and economic empowerment for 150 young mothers.
  • Liberian Cuisine Food Fair
    • Date: November 9th
    • Location: [Location TBD]
    • Details: Savor delicious Liberian dishes, enjoy live music, and experience cultural performances while supporting our mission. This vibrant day of fun, food, and fundraising will celebrate Liberia’s rich culture while making a lasting difference.
  • Fundraising Gala: “A Night of Art and Impact”
    • Date: November 27th (HMNI’s 3rd Anniversary)
    • Location: [Venue TBD]
    • Details: Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating three years of impact with art, music, networking, and Food. The gala will feature performances, an art auction, recognition of Maternal and Child Health Champions, and stories from program participants whose lives have been transformed. Ticket will be on sale for $25, $50, $75 and $100. It will be a night dedicated to celebrating the power of community and collective action.

Fundraising Goals

Our goal is to raise $15,000 USD to successfully complete ongoing activities of two of our programs, directly impacting the following:

  • EmpowerHer Journey Program: Empowering 150 young mothers through life skills training, seed funding to start small businesses, and ongoing mentorship. This program focuses on supporting first-time mothers in Liberia’s rural and marginalized communities.
  • Community Health Volunteers Empowerment Program: Strengthening the capacity of 100 community health volunteers to serve as frontline advocates and caregivers for maternal and child health. These volunteers play a critical role in providing prenatal and postnatal care, ensuring safe births, and educating their communities on health best practices.
  • Maternal and Child Health Outcomes: By empowering women and training health volunteers, we aim to improve access to safe births and promote healthy pregnancies and safe motherhood for young women in poor and marginalized communities.

The Help a Mother and Newborn Initiative (HMNI) is a dedicated non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of young women and promoting maternal and child health in Liberia. Founded in 2021 with a mission to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and promote overall well-being, HMNI focuses on providing comprehensive support to first-time young pregnant women and mothers, empowering them through skills training, economic opportunities, and health education. Additionally, HMNI’s Community Health Volunteers program strengthens community health system by providing essential training and resources to those volunteers caring for women in their communities.

Since its inception, HMNI has made significant strides in improving maternal health outcomes, directly impacting over 2,000 individuals across 30+ communities in Liberia through partnerships with 10+ local health facilities, 50+ community leaders, and multiple local and international organizations.
